Ryan Quigley was drafted by Oakland in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft.
Ryan Quigley (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 22nd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. Quigley becomes the second Husky to be drafted by the A’s, the other being Russ Cormier in the 12th round of the 1989 draft. Northeastern has now had a player drafted in four straight seasons.
Quigley led the Huskies in 2009 with 80 strikeouts which is the 10th-highest single-season total ever recorded by a Husky. Quigely averaged 10.87 strikeouts per nine innings, also the 10th-best in the program.
Quigley was named the CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 30 for his outing at Hofstra, pitching eight innings while striking out seven. In the outing, he allowed only seven scattered singles. Quigley eclipsed double-digit strikeouts twice this season with 10 against Iona on March 13 and 12 against Delaware on May 9.
In the Northeastern record book, Quigley ranks high in many categories. He is second all-time in career strikeouts-per-nine inning, and ranks 10th all-time in strikeouts and fifth in saves.
Northeastern recently completed its season reaching the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 and finished with a 28-25 record overall and going 13-11 in the tough Colonial Athletic Association.
Quigley is the 30th Northeastern player to be drafted by a Major League organization. In the last 10 years, 13 Huskies have been drafted with at least one in each of the last four seasons. The highest draft pick from Northeastern was Carlos Pena of the Tampa Bay Rays, who was selected 10th overall in 1998. In 2006, pitcher Adam Ottavino was also selected in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals.
