Carlos Pena named to 2009 AL All-Star team
July 12, 2009
Boston, Mass.

Carlos Pena has been named to the 2009 American League All-Star team, replacing Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the squad. The 2009 midsummer classic, to be played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, will be Pena's first All-Star game in his ninth major league season.

Pena took part in the Home Run Derby Monday night, finishing in fifth place. He hit five home runs, all to left center, to get into a three-way tie for fourth place with Joe Mauer and Albert Pujols. However, in the tiebreaker, Pujols won with two homers to Pena's one.

Pena, who leads the American League in home runs with 24, has 187 career home runs and 524 career RBI. In 2007, he was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year and was the American League Silver Slugger at first base. In 2008, he won his first Gold Glove Award. In both 2007 and '08, Pena finished in the top 10 in the AL MVP voting.

The All-Star Game airs Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on FOX.
