Former Huskies baseball pitcher Greg Montalbano, who was inducted into the Northeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005, passed away on Friday, Aug. 21, after a long battle with cancer. He was only 31.

Montalbano was one of Northeastern's biggest stars on the baseball diamond. After an outstanding career at St. John's of Shrewsbury, Mass., Montalbano went 19-7 with a 2.55 ERA and 217 strikeouts, which was good for first all-time in program history. In 1999, he was named All-America, All-New England, All-America East and America East Pitcher of the Year. That season, he threw a no-hitter against Niagara on March 20.

Montalbano was a fifth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 1999 MLB Draft and played in the Red Sox organization until 2004. He was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2001 after posting a 12-6 record, 3.49 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 139-1/3 innings.

The ECAC's Award of Valor and the New England Hero Award from Northeastern's Center for the Study of Sport in Society recognized Montalbano's struggle with adversity. He had battled cancer numerous times while pitching for the Huskies and Red Sox.

Montalbano graduated Northeastern with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Calling hours will be held Monday from 4-8 p.m., at St. Luke's Church in Westborough, Mass. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., at St. Luke's Church.
