Northeastern 14, Stony Brook 1 (game 2)
May 3, 2003
University Field (Stony Brook, NY)

Northeastern bounced back in the second half of a doubleheader against Stony Brook, downing the Seawolves 14-1 behind seven strong innings from Jordan Thomson.

The Husky offense came alive after being stifled in game one. Mike Steinberg started the game with a double off the top of the wall in right and later scored thanks to a Tim Bush sacrifice fly to left. Northeastern added another run in the top of the first on an Arman Sidhu liner to right that brought home Chris Emanuele.

The Huskies blew the game open with an eight-run second. After Stony Brook walked the bases loaded, Bush put Northeastern ahead 6-0 by knocking a grand slam over the left field fence. Two more SBU walks and a Brian Nutting single gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead. The advantage swelled to eight when Matt Morizio scored Sidhu and then to nine when Nutting came around after a Seawolf error. The final run crossed the plate when Emanuele was hit by a pitch that forced Morizio across.

Bush (2-3, five RBIs) started things off again in the top of the third with a double to open the inning. A Sidhu single advanced Bush to third and he came home on a Nutting single to left to give NU an 11-0 lead.

Omar Pena added his third home run of the season in the top of the fourth and NU wrapped up its scoring outburst in the top of the fifth, adding two more runs. Jeff Maher doubled to lead off the fifth and would later score on a wild pitch. Nutting (2-4, two RBIs) drew a walk and advanced to second on the second wild pitch of the inning. He scored when Jeff Heriot doubled to left to make it 14-0.

The lone Stony Brook run came in the seventh when two NU errors allowed both Mike Russo and Andrew Larsen to get on. Isidro Fortuna brought Russo home with a liner to center.

Thomson went the distance for the Huskies, striking out eight and allowing six hits to record his third win of the season. Thomson pitched a complete game shutout in his last start against Hartford on April 27 and has not allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings pitched.

The two teams are back in action on Sunday for another doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
