Vermont 6, Northeastern 3 (game 1)
Vermont broke open a 1-1 game in the top of the third inning by scoring four runs to take a 5-1 lead. The first three Catamounts to step up to the plate each had a base hit. Bobby Tewksbary led off with a double and came home on a Jeff Barry single to right. Barry Chamberland then singled. Both Chamberland and Barry advanced a base on a passed ball. NU starter Devin Monds settled down and struck out the next two batters, but with two outs freshman Kyle Brault hit a towering shot over centerfielder Jeff Heriot's head that scored Barry and Chamberland. Brault ended up on third, but walked home as the relay throw from center went into the NU dugout.
UVM got on the board first in the top of the second inning after Nick Roberts hit a sacrifice fly into foul territory with the bases loaded, scoring Jason Iannoni. The Huskies answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with two outs. Vermont starter Justin Bissonnette walked Jeff Heriot and Brian Nutting before freshman Matt Morizio knocked in Heriot with a double to tie the game 1-1.
The Huskies narrowed the gap to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth as Chris Emanuele reached to lead off the inning on an error by Tewksbary. Tim Bush and Arman Sidhu added singles to load the bases for Heriot, who singled to center, scoring Emanuele and Bush. That was as close as the Huskies would get though, as Vermont senior Jamie Merchant came on in the seventh inning to pick up the save.
Bissonnette earned the win on the mound for Vermont only giving up two earned runs over six innings, while Monds went the distance and struck out eight for the Huskies.
Northeastern falls to 19-20 with the loss overall and 8-9 in America East action.
