Vermont 3, Northeastern 1 (game 2)
The Huskies struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Omar Pena singled to left field and then stole second base. UVM catcher Nick Roberts' throw to second was high and Pena advanced to third on the error. Mike Steinberg followed with a sharp double down the left field line to plate Pena and give NU its only run of the day.
The Catamounts came out with two runs in the top of the fourth to go up 2-1. Bobby Tewksbary led off with a double to the gap in leftcenter. Jeff Barry followed with a single that went just under the glove of Pena at second base, brining home Tewksbary. Barry stole second and came home on a Barry Chamberland double to left.
Vermont wrapped up the scoring for the day in the fifth, plating what turned out to be the final run of the afternoon, to make it 3-1. Nick Roberts doubled to center field and would later score on a Tewksbary (2-3, RBI) double to left.
The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and third, but could not take advantage of the opportunity.
Junior Jordan Thomson went the distance for NU, striking out seven and walking only one. Slater picked up the win for Vermont going 6 2/3 innings. Brent Dobens came on to record the final out and pick up the save.
The Huskies return to action on Thursday when they host Centenary at 3:30 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
