Northeastern took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning as freshman Chris Emanuele led off with a single to left field and then stole second. Sophomore Tim Bush followed and drove one down the left field line that just went foul. Three pitches later he lined a Jamie Merchant offering over the third base bag for a double, scoring Emanuele with the go-ahead run.
The Catamounts struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Kyle Brault took a Hedrick offering deep to left-center field for his 10th home run of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Merchant, the Vermont starter, held the NU bats in check over the first six innings, allowing only one hit. The Huskies finally got to the big Catamount hurler in the top of the seventh and knotted the score, 1-1. Jeff Heriot led off the inning trying to bunt his way on, down the third base line. An errant throw by UVM third baseman Jason Iannoni turned added a two-base error to Heriot's bunt single and he ended up motoring all the way around to third base. Sophomore Miguel Paquette followed with a single that snuck through the left side, bringing home Heriot to tie the game.
The Huskies looked to add more in the seventh, loading the bases, but Merchant induced a ground out off the bat off Brad Czarnowski to end the threat.
Hedrick allowed just three hits, but walked seven. He had to work out of several spots of trouble as Vermont stranded 10 runners. Hedrick walked Jason Carey and Iannoni to start the sixth, but got former Husky Leif Ekelund to foul out and then fanned the next two hitters to get out of the jam. Hedrick improved to 7-1 on the year. His 15 strikeouts were three off the America East Championship record last set by former NU standout Jay O'Shaughnessy in the championship game versus Maine in 1994. Hedrick entered the playoff leading America East in strikeouts per nine innings at 11.73 per contest.
Northeastern is now 8-0 all-time in America East Tournament play against the Catamounts. The Huskies improve to 25-21 overall. The Huskies will play Stony Brook at 3:30 on Friday. The Seawolves won Thursday's first game 4-2 over Maine. NU took three of four games from Stony Brook earlier this season.
