| 2003 Schedule/Results Northeastern 11, Stony Brook 0
Fourth-seeded NU, which entered the day without a loss in the double-elimination tournament, needed just one win over Stony Brook to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals. The Huskies looked to be on their way in game one, jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead, but the Seawolves forced a second and final game by winning a slugfest 11-10. The Huskies entered last season's championship round needing a single win over Maine for the title and NCAA bid, but the Black Bears swept a pair to end the NU campaign. It wouldn't be deja vu Saturday at Vermont, however, as the Huskies pounded the Seawolves in the finale. The Huskies (27-22) came out of the gates quickly in the deciding game. Mike Steinberg led off the NU half of the first inning with a double and Arman Sidhu knocked him in with a double of his own for what turned out to be the only run NU would need. Sidhu came home later in the inning on a misplayed ball by Stony Brook starting pitcher James Swejkowski and the Huskies took a 2-0 advantage. Back-to-back home runs by Matt Morizio and Steinberg (3-5, three runs) chased Swejkowski and doubled the Northeastern advantage to 4-0 after two innings. Brad Czarnowski singled in the bottom of the third, scoring Omar Pena, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, to make it 5-0. The Huskies broke the game open in the fourth, plating five runs and extending their lead to 10-0. A two-run single by Championship Most Outstanding Player Miguel Paquette increased the advantage to 7-0. Pena doubled to left center and Czarnowski followed with a back-breaking three-run homer to right. NU scored the last run of the afternoon in the sixth, as Paquette led off the inning with a walk. A single by Czarnowski (3-5, four RBIs) put runners on first and second. Freshman Chris Emanuele then singled through the left side on the next play, bringing home Paquette and creating the final margin of 11-0. Thomson (5-5) picked up the win for Northeastern, striking out three and walking only two in a great outing. Thomson had a quick roller coaster ride in the tournament. He entered Friday's game in the ninth inning against Stony Brook with NU protecting a slim 2-1 lead but surrendered a three-run homer. The Huskies rallied in their half of the ninth to give Thomson the win. Paquette, a first baseman, entered the tournament batting .195 with eight RBIs in 34 games. He went 6-15 (.400) with seven RBIs and a homer in NU's four tourney games. Paquette was joined on the All-Championship team by five teammates: pitchers Justin Hedrick and Thomson, shortstop Sidhu, DH Steinberg and outfielder Czarnowski (4-8 with six RBIs and two homers on championship Saturday). The others to make the team were catcher Aaron Izaryk of Maine, second baseman Jim McCurdy of Stony Brook, third baseman Joe Drapeau of Maine and outfielders Andrew Larsen and Lee Lipschutz of Stony Brook. It will be the seventh appearance in the NCAA tournament for the Huskies, who last made it in 1997. The Huskies are the first No. 4 seed to win the conference championship. The regional sites and pairings will be announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. (Eastern) on ESPN2. • Game 1: Full story & box score Stony Brook 0 (33-21) Name (Pos) AB R H RBI BB SO PO A MCCURDY, J. 2b............ 4 0 2 0 0 0 1 1 LARSEN, A. cf............. 4 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 DEVINS, M. ss............. 4 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 WOOD, D. 1b............... 4 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 CICATELLI, C lf........... 4 0 0 0 0 2 2 0 LIPSCHUTZ, L rf........... 2 0 0 0 1 0 3 0 KULL, E. c................ 3 0 1 0 0 0 9 0 RUSSO, M. dh.............. 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 RENNER, G. 3b............. 2 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 SZWEJKOWSKI p............. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 BRUMFIELD, W p............ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 ZYDOR, S. p............... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 MISCHO, D. p.............. 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 Totals.................... 30 0 3 0 2 3 24 2 Northeastern 11 (27-21) Name (Pos) AB R H RBI BB SO PO A Mike Steinberg dh......... 5 3 3 1 0 0 0 0 Arman Sidhu ss............ 5 1 1 1 0 1 2 2 Tim Bush 3b............... 3 1 1 0 2 0 0 6 Jeff Heriot cf............ 5 0 0 0 0 2 2 0 Miguel Paquette 1b........ 3 2 1 2 2 1 13 0 Omar Pena 2b.............. 4 2 1 0 1 1 2 3 Brad Czarnowski lf........ 5 1 3 4 0 1 4 0 Chris Emanuele rf......... 4 0 1 1 1 1 1 0 Matt Morizio c............ 4 1 2 1 0 1 3 0 Jordan Thomson p.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Totals.................... 38 11 13 10 6 8 27 11 Score by innings: R H E ---------------------------------------------- Stony Brook 000 000 000 - 0 3 3 Northeastern 221 501 00 - 11 13 0 ---------------------------------------------- E - MCCURDY, J.; KULL, E.; SZWEJKOWSKI.
