Hedrick struck out the side in the first inning. He fanned the first two batters then loaded the bases with a single and two walks, before getting Hartford’s Matt Denorfia to strike out swinging.
NU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Steinberg hit an RBI single to right field. Brad Czarnowski followed that up with a two-run single up the middle.
In the top of the third, Denorfia drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to cut the Hawks’ deficit to 3-1, but the Huskies answered with a two-run blast over the left field fence by Tim Bush for a 5-1 edge heading into the fourth inning.
Hartford made Hedrick pay for a two-out walk in the top of the fifth inning. Brian Eck launched a rocket off the scoreboard over the 375-feet marker in left centerfield. The two-run shot cut NU’s lead to 5-3.
