Nearly every Northeastern player made it into the lineup before 6942 fans. Justin Hedrick started on the mound for NU and allowed two runs in one inning. He walked the first two batters, but then settled down and got Manny Ramirez to pop up and struck out Kevin Millar looking. Mark Bellhorn and Jason Varitek followed and each hit one-run singles. Hedrick then got Brian Daubach to fly out to center field.
Curt Schilling made his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform and pitched the first three innings. After a perfect first inning, senior first baseman Paul Koslowski led off the second inning with a single. It was the first hit given up by Schilling in Spring Training. Koslowski moved up to second base when Schilling threw away a pickoff-attempt a batter later. Schilling then struck out the next two batters. With two outs, Brad Czarnowski hit a single to right center and Koslowski came around to score but was thrown out out at the plate by Sox center fielder Gabe Kapler. Schilling was credited with the win.
Matt Morizio led off the top of the third with a single but didn't get any further. Eric Murray popped up and Mike Steinberg grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Devin Monds came in and pitched the second and third, holding the Sox scoreless. Ramirez hit a bomb to left field in the third inning but Czarnowski backed up to the wall and made the catch. Millar followed with a fly-out to Jeff Heriot.
Adam Ottavino pitched the fourth for NU. With the bases loaded and one out, he struck out Gabe Kapler and got reigning American League batting champ Bill Mueller to ground out to Miguel Paquette at first base.
Alan Embree pitched the fourth for the Sox and set the Huskies down in order. Bobby Jones, Edwin Almonte and David McCarty held NU scoreless for the final three innings. Brian Nutting led off the fifth inning with a walk. He stole second but was stranded as Edwin Almonte got the next three outs in a row.
Dave Pellegrine, Matt Piryk, Tristin Besse and Tony Humeniuk each pitched in the final three innings. Kevin Millar hit an RBI double and Cesar Cresco hit a grand slam off Pellegrine in the sixth that made the score 7-0.
The first time Northeastern played the Red Sox was a 10-2 loss on April 11, 1977. Luis Tiant started and Bill Lee came in relief. Charlie Peterson started for the Huskies.
Northeastern finishes off its spring training schedule Saturday with games against Bowling Green (10:30 a.m.) and Indiana Purdue (3 p.m.) at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
