The Huskies, who had notched three hits in last season’s exhibition game versus Boston, only had three baserunners the entire game. Senior Tim Bush reached on an error by third baseman Shawn Wooten in the second inning, senior Miguel Paquette was hit by a John Halama pitch in the fourth and senior Jeff Heriot drew a walk off of Scott Cassidy in the seventh.
Senior Devin Monds started on the mound for NU and pitched one inning. He got outfielder Johnny Damon and infielder Ramon Vazquez to ground out before walking outfielder Manny Ramirez and designated hitter David Ortiz. However, Monds geared up and struck out catcher Doug Mirabelli to end the inning.
The Sox though jumped on sophomore Dave Pellegrine in the second inning, scoring four runs, allowing an RBI double to Damon and a two-run triple to Vazquez. He did however freeze Ramirez for a called strike three on his final pitch of the day.
Senior Matt Piryk relieved Pellegrine with two outs in the second and the score 4-0 Boston, and struck out Ortiz. He then pitched a scoreless third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, with senior Jim Madison on the mound, freshman John Ursone displayed great defense when he snagged a Ricky Perez fly ball, running down the right field line and nearly crashing into the wall.
Boston broke it open in the bottom of the fifth with 12 runs off of three Husky pitchers. Dave McCarty and George Lombard were the main culprits in the inning; McCarty hit an RBI triple off of freshman Trevor Smith and a RBI single off of Bush while Lombard smacked a two-run single off of Bush and a two-run single off of sophomore Tristan Besse, who finished off the inning striking out Simon Pond.
In the sixth, freshmen Tyler Thornton and Aaron Greenblatt pitched. Thornton got Perez to ground out on a nice play by freshman Mike Lyon, who ranged far to his left to grab the ball in short right field and throw out the runner. Greenblatt struck out Ron Johnson, the manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate.
Every position player and nearly every pitcher made it into the game for the Huskies in front of 7,499 fans.
The first time Northeastern played the Red Sox was a 10-2 loss on April 11, 1977. Luis Tiant started and Bill Lee came in relief. Charlie Peterson started for the Huskies.
Last season, Boston defeated NU, 7-0, on March 5, 2004. Justin Hedrick started for the Huskies and Matt Morizio, Brad Czarnowski and Paul Koslowski recorded the lone hits for Northeastern.
The Huskies resume their 2005 season with two games on Saturday in Bradenton, Fla. NU will battle Georgetown at 10:30 a.m. and Bowling Green at 2:30 p.m.
