Ottavino (1-2) allowed just four hits and one walk. Only two runners reached third base off of him. His 12 strikeouts tied a season and career high. He struck out 12 batters against then No. 1 Georgia Tech on March 7.
The 12 strikeouts also made Ottavino just the seventh Husky pitcher to reach 200 career strikeouts. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native now has 206 strikeouts, placing him seventh on the all-time list, just 35 strikeouts away from Jordan Thomson, who holds the top mark with 241.
Ottavino is already the school's record holder in single-season strikeouts with 106 last season.
The Huskies (7-7, 2-2 CAA) scored one run in the first when senior Matt Morizio drove home senior Arman Sidhu with a single up the middle. NU capped the scoring in the fifth inning when freshman Jeff Thomson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and senior Chris Emanuele drew a bases-loaded walk.
It was all Ottavino needed as he kept the Blue Hens (10-8, 0-4 CAA) in check. Morizio finished the game in the ninth, earning his third save of the season.
Mike McGuire (0-1) was the losing pitcher after allowing three runs on seven hits, walking five and striking out six. The damage could have been worse, but the Huskies left 13 men on base.
NU and Delaware will resume the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Junior Dave Pellegrine will start for the Huskies opposite the Blue Hens' Todd Ozog.
