The Huskies (10-9, 5-2 CAA) moved into sole possession of third place with the win, one game ahead of the Seahawks (21-7, 4-3 CAA).
Morizio's single came in the third inning and brought home senior Arman Sidhu and freshman Mike Tamsin. In his next at-bat, he came up with two runners on and slammed a Brett Braxton (5-1) fastball into the bleachers in right-center to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead.
Ottavino made the score stand up, shutting out the league-leading offense through the first six innings. The Seahawks got to him in the seventh on a two-run single down the left field line by Lee McLean and an RBI single by Jason Appel, all with no outs.
However, Ottavino (2-2) settled down to get three outs and stop the UNCW rally. He finished allowing three runs on eight hits, walking four to go with his eight strikeouts.
The Huskies added insurance runs in the eighth when Tamsin smacked a single up the middle that scored seniors Brian Nutting and Chris Emanuele. Tamsin was 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored; he extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Trevor Smith nailed down the win and earned his second save of the season after pitching the final two innings and registering three strikeouts.
The Huskies and Seahawks resume the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The scheduled starters are Thomas Benton for UNCW and Dave Pellegrine for NU.
