Adam Ottavino pitched Northeastern's eighth no-hitter in school history in a 2-0 win over James Madison.
Junior pitcher Adam Ottavino of Northeastern University baseball team threw a no-hitter to beat James Madison, 2-0, on Friday at Northeastern's Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Mass. He held the Dukes hitless over nine innings, walked just three batters and struck out a career-high 14. It was Ottavino's first career no-hitter and shutout. Senior shortstop Arman Sidhu hit a solo home run for the game-winning run.

Ottavino's feat was the ninth no-hitter in Northeastern history and the first since Greg Montalbano held Niagara hitless on March 20, 1999. It was NU's first nine-inning no-hitter since Joe Killelea no-hit MIT on May 3, 1985.

Ottavino was only in trouble once during the game. In the sixth inning, Matt Townsend reach on a throwing error by Sidhu and then took second and third when Ottavino made an errant pickoff throw. Michael Cowgill was the next hitter and he drove a pitch to deep right-center, but senior Chris Emanuele tracked it down to save the no-hit bid and the lead. The following batter, Kellen Kulbacki, struck out to end the threat.

Ottavino retired the final 11 batters, including Kulbacki, the nation's leader in home runs, on the final out of the game.

Townsend was the only Dukes player to reach third base as Ottavino kept JMU off-balanced all day with a mix of fastballs, curveballs and changeups. This was the third time this season Ottavino cracked the double-digit mark in strikeouts.

In just his third season, Ottavino has 228 career strikeouts in 202-2/3 innings. He is currently second all-time in Husky history with those 228 strikeouts, just 13 shy of Jordan Thomson's record of 241. He has made six starts this season and has a 3-2 record, a 3.76 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched. One of his losses came to then No. 1 ranked Georgia Tech on March 7.

Northeastern improves to 13-10 overall and 8-2 in its first season in the highly-competitive Colonial Athletic Association. James Madison, second in the league in hitting with a .334 average coming into the game, fell to 20-12 overall and 9-4 in the CAA.

Sidhu led off the scoring with his second homer of the season in just the second at bat of the game and scored an insurance run on a Matt Morizio single in the sixth inning.

James Madison pitcher Greg Nesbitt (4-3) tossed a solid game, allowing two runs and six hits with six strikeouts over eight innings.

Northeastern takes on James Madison in the second game of the CAA series on Saturday at 1 p.m. and completes the series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
