The Huskies' seven-game conference winning streak has been snapped while the Dukes (21-12, 10-4 CAA) end their four-game CAA losing streak.
All five of JMU's runs were unearned as the Huskies (13-11, 8-3 CAA) committed three errors in the contest. In the fifth inning, JMU's Mitchell Moses singled and stole second and advanced to third on catcher Dan Milano's throwing error. Moses scored two batters later on Joe Lake's RBI fielder's choice.
In the sixth inning, NU's Mike Lyon switched from left field to third base and committed two errors that led to four Dukes runs. Junior Dave Pellegrine (3-3) suffered from the errors. He pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits, walking four and striking out seven. All the runs he allowed were unearned.
Senior Brian Nutting had the lone good day for the Huskies, going 3-4.
JMU's Travis Miller shut down NU over eight innings, scattering just three hits, walking five and fanning 10.
The loss comes a day after junior Adam Ottavino threw a no-hitter against the Dukes with 14 strikeouts. Pellegrine today did not allow a hit through the first 3-2/3 innings. Going back to the end of NU's 7-4 loss to Boston College on Thursday, Husky pitchers had faced 54 consecutive batters without allowing a hit. Nate Schill ended that run with a two-out double in the fourth inning.
The Huskies and Dukes will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The pitching matchup pits JMU's Ryan Reid against NU's Kris Dabrowiecki.
