Northeastern 14, Mount St. Mary's 3
In the first inning with the bases loaded, freshman Mike Tamsin stroked a single up the middle to bring home two runs. Junior Dan Milano hit an RBI single down the left field line to give NU a 3-1 lead. An error and a fielder’s choice later and the Huskies were up 5-1 after just one frame.
NU (2-1) tacked on three runs in the third on RBI singles by Milano, senior Brian Nutting and senior Chris Emanuele, who reached base five of the six times he made a plate appearance.
Three Huskies hit their first homers of the season today. Sophomore Mike Lyon went deep to lead off the fourth inning, freshman James Donaldson got his first collegiate hit when he homered to lead off the fifth, and Emanuele crushed a two-run homer in the sixth.
In all, the Huskies totaled 14 hits, five of them extra-base hits, and drew five walks.
NU made a winner out of freshman Trevor Smith (1-0), pitching in his first collegiate game. Smith went six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits, walking four and striking out five.
Mountaineers (3-2) starter Andrew Germuth (0-1) lasted just a third of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits, walking one, striking out none and hitting two other batters.
The Huskies play their final game in Florida tomorrow morning versus Bowling Green at the IMG Academies at 10:30 a.m.
