Adam Ottavino dazzled yet again, striking out a career-high 16 batters in NU's 2-0 win over William & Mary Friday.
Junior Adam Ottavino turned in yet another dominating performance, striking out a career-high 16 batters in eight shutout innings as the Huskies topped William & Mary, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

Ottavino (4-2) struck out at least two batters in seven of the eight innings he pitched. His first strikeout put him atop the all-time NU career strikeouts list, passing Jordan Thomson (2001-04). Ottavino now has 257 strikeouts in just 219-2/3 career innings.

Sophomore Josh Porter provided the only offense Ottavino needed, homering to left field in the third inning off of Tribe starter Sean Sosonko (1-5).

NU (16-15, 10-6 CAA) added an insurance run in the sixth inning when freshman Mike Tamsin doubled to right-center and scored on Matt Morizio's RBI single to center.

The only trouble Ottavino got into was in the seventh inning when he hit cleanup batter Greg Sexton to lead off the inning and then allowed a single to Greg Maliniak to put runners at first and third with no one out.

Ottavino, however, reared back and fired at the Tribe, striking out the next three batters to end the threat.

Morizio finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

For Ottavino, it is another brilliant outing added to his resume. The right-hander from Brooklyn, N.Y. now has 10 career double-digit strikeout games and owns both the career and single-season (106) strikeout records. With 87 strikeouts this season, he is already fourth on the single-season list, well ahead of his own 2005 record-setting pace.

Ottavino's performance was the first 16-strikeout game for an NU pitcher since Greg Montalbano struck out 16 against Wagner on March 18, 2000. The NU record in one game is 18, by Jay O'Shaughnessy against Hartford on May 24, 1994.

Sosonko took the loss for the Tribe (13-24, 7-15 CAA) after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out eight.

The Huskies and Tribe resume the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. Starting pitchers are Dave Pellegrine for NU and Michael LaFleur for William & Mary.
