The Huskies (17-15, 11-6 CAA) also had a brilliant defensive play in the third inning when they turned a triple play. Down 2-1 in the third inning, Pellegrine was facing Jeff Lunardi with runners on first and second. Lunardi hit a hard one-hopper to third baseman James Donaldson, who tagged third base, threw to the second baseman Nutting who completed the triple play with a throw to first baseman Josh Porter.
The play ended a major Tribe (13-25, 7-16 CAA) threat and the Huskies capitalized in the bottom of the inning. Tied 2-2 with the bases loaded, senior Arman Sidhu smacked a ground-rule double over the fence in left-center to plate two runs and give NU a 4-2 lead.
The Huskies tacked on a run in the fifth and three more in the eighth.
For Pellegrine (4-4), it was a relief to get the run support. In his last two outings, the Huskies had not scored a run in either game and average just 2.4 runs when he starts. He tossed seven effective innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking three and fanning five.
Trevor Smith pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit while striking out three in recording his third save.
William & Mary's Michael LaFleur (2-5) started and took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over three innings.
The Huskies and Tribe hope to play tomorrow despite forecasted rain. Game time has been moved up to 12:30 p.m.. The scheduled starters are Kris Dabrowiecki for NU and Sean Grieve for the Tribe.
