Beanpot Tournament
Northeastern 7, Massachusetts 6

April 25, 2006
Fenway Park (Boston, Mass.)

Senior Jeff Maher hit the go-ahead RBI double and senior Matt Morizio escaped a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth as the Northeastern baseball team earned third place in the Beanpot Tournament with a 7-6 win over Massachusetts Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Morizio came in to the ninth with a two-run lead and allowed a walk, bloop single and a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. The senior then got Derrick Durepo to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, which scored a run, but got two outs. Morizio then got Ryan Franczek to fly out to center to end the game and earn his seventh save of the season.

The Huskies' winning runs came in the seventh inning. In a 4-4 tie, freshman Mike Tamsin led off with a double to dead center hit off the center field wall. Tamsin came around to score when Maher doubled to the left field corner to give NU a 5-4 lead. After a walk to senior Arman Sidhu, junior Dan Milano hit a single to center to bring home Maher. NU (19-15) tacked on a run in the ninth inning on a bases loaded walk by Chris Emanuele to make it 7-5.

The Huskies scored their first four runs of the game in the second inning when sophomore Caleb Ginsberg hit an RBI double, senior Brian Nutting drew a bases loaded walk and Tamsin hit a two-run double down the left field line. Tamsin extended his hitting streak to 13 games, his second streak of that length this season.

Massachusetts (9-19) was led by Bryan Garrity, who was 3-4 with an RBI, Ryan Franczek, who was 2-4 with three runs scored.

Freshman Trevor Smith (5-3) earned the win for the Huskies after allowing three runs in four innings in relief of sophomore Mitch Duggins, who started and gave up two runs in four innings.

Tom Cote (0-4) took the loss for the Minutemen, allowing two runs in 3-1/3 innings in relief of starter Mike DiCato, who went the first 4-2/3 innings, yielding four runs on five hits.

The Huskies will host Towson this Friday at Friedman Diamond at 3 p.m. Adam Ottavino will be the starter for the Huskies.
