May 3, 2006
Friedman Diamond (Brookline, Mass.)

Harvard third baseman Steffan Wilson hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning to cap a five-run rally as the Crimson beat the Northeastern baseball team 7-5 on a rainy Wednesday at Friedman Diamond.

Going into the ninth inning, the Huskies held a 5-2 lead and appeared headed to a win. However, freshman Jeff Thomson allowed a single, got a foul out and then allowed a double to set up second and third with just one out. The next batter, Matt Vance, grounded to senior shortstop Arman Sidhu, who threw the ball away, allowing both runners to score and Vance to move to second.

NU went to senior closer Matt Morizio, who struck out Chris Mackey for the second, but what should have been the last out. He then walked Josh Klimkiewicz and Wilson then crushed the ball to center field. Senior center fielder Chris Emanuele fell down on the rain-soaked turf trying to catch the ball, which rolled to the wall, 435 feet away from home plate. Wilson cruised around the bases for the home run and gave Harvard a 7-5 lead.

Morizio (0-2) took the loss, though the runs he allowed were unearned.

The Huskies (21-17) had built up their earlier lead thanks to a four-run second inning. Morizio started the inning with a single and scored when senior Jeff Maher doubled to deep left-center. Maher came around on a sacrifice fly by freshman James Donaldson.

Later in the inning with sophomores Josh Porter and Alex Fox on base, Emanuele ripped a double to left-center to score both runners and give NU a 4-1 lead.

Emanuele had two hits and two RBI on the day. His two hits moved him within one of tying for the all-time NU hits mark, held by Kevin Kim with 215.

The Huskies did have strong pitching for most of the day. NU sophomore starter Mitch Duggins lasted 3-2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit. He walked three and fanned four batters. Sophomore Bobby Carrington tossed three shutout innings and struck out four batters.

For Harvard (21-18-1), Taylor Meehan (1-1) earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Jason Brown pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.

The Huskies will host their final CAA home series of the season when they take on Hofstra, starting Friday at Friedman Diamond at 3 p.m. Junior ace Adam Ottavino gets the call for NU.
