Pellegrine was sharp, but a little wild, walking five batters. He struck out four. However, he got himself out of some jams and was helped by his defense in others.
Hofstra (20-28-1, 9-17 CAA) had two runners on with one out in each of the first two innings, but Pellegrine (6-4) worked out of them. In the fourth inning, he picked off a runner on first base to stop a threat. In the eighth inning, the Pride had runners on the corners with one out, but Pellegrine induced a ground ball double play to end the inning.
Maher hit his second home run of the season off of Will DeVito (1-8) in the fifth inning. Senior Arman Sidhu followed with a single to right and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Chris Emanuele.
DeVito pitched only five innings, yielding two runs on five hits. He walked one and fanned three batters.
The Huskies (22-18, 15-8 CAA) managed only five hits on the day, but made them count.
Prior to the game, Northeastern honored its five seniors, Emanuele, Sidhu, Maher, Nutting and Matt Morizio. Also, the Huskies recognized Emanuele, for breaking NU's all-time hits record, and junior Adam Ottavino for breaking the NU all-time strikeouts record.
The two teams will play the rubber game of this series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. NU will throw Kris Dabrowiecki against Hofstra's Patrick Rogers.
