Senior Matt Morizio hit a dramatic, game-tying home run to lead off the ninth inning and sophomore Josh Porter hit a go-ahead, two-run single as the Northeastern baseball team scored five runs in the frame to beat Virginia Commonwealth 8-4 Saturday morning in Richmond, Va.

With the win, the Huskies (23-20, 16-9 CAA) have clinched a spot in their first-ever CAA Tournament.

Morizio's home run came when NU was down 4-3 after the Rams (26-22, 14-11 CAA) had scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead. Up 3-2, NU brought in freshman Trevor Smith, who promptly allowed a single to Sergio Miranda and walked Scott Sizemore. The Huskies then turned to Morizio (1-2), who allowed a bunt single to Tim St. Clair to load the bases. The next batter Jared Bolden then ripped a single to right to bring home two runs and give VCU a 4-3 lead.

Morizio then managed to hold the Rams and stop the bleeding. He got Kwan Evans to ground to sophomore third baseman Mike Lyon who threw home to get St. Clair. VCU attempted a double-steal, but Bolden missed a sign and was late trying to steal third, allowing Milano to easily throw him out. Finally, Trai Harris flied out to center, ending the threat.

After Morizio tied the game with his homer off of John Leonard, freshman Mike Tamsin walked, junior Dan Milano smashed a double to left to put runners on second and third. Senior Jeff Maher was intentionally walked to load the bases and that's when Porter came through with his two-run single up the middle to give the Huskies a 6-4 advantage.

Senior Arman Sidhu hit an RBI single to make it 7-4 and Lyon grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to bring home another run for the 8-4 lead.

The Rams had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Sizemore took NU starter Adam Ottavino deep. The Huskies though answered back in the third inning, plating three runs on an RBI ground out by Morizio and RBI singles by Tamsin and Porter.

Ottavino pitched seven innings and held the Rams to two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out six, raising his season total to 105 strikeouts, one shy of his own single-season record of 106, set last season.

Leonard threw eight innings and yielded four runs on 10 hits, walking three and fanning nine. Mick Mattaliano (3-2) was roughed up for four runs on two hits without retiring a hitter and was staked with the loss.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The scheduled starters are Dave Pellegrine for the Huskies and Cody Eppley for the Rams.
