VCU (27-22, 15-11 CAA) took advantage of four walks and a hit batsman by freshman Trevor Smith in the eighth inning. The Rams scored the winning run when Chris Jackson drew a walk with the bases loaded. After a sacrifice fly made it 6-4, VCU's Scott Sizemore hit a grand slam off of freshman Jeff Thomson for a 10-4 lead.
The Huskies had come back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game. NU scored two runs in the third inning when sophomore Mike Lyon doubled and came around to score on a single by senior Chris Emanuele, who advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a ground out by senior Matt Morizio. This cut the VCU lead to one, 3-2.
VCU added a run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Tim St. Clair giving the Rams a 4-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, NU (23-21, 16-10 CAA) tacked on a run on an RBI single by senior Jeff Maher. Senior Brian Nutting then tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run.
Junior Dave Pellegrine had started and pitched two innings, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits. Sophomore Kris Dabrowiecki then came in and pitched five innings and limited the Rams to one run on five hits, walking one and fanning five batters.
Smith (5-4) took the loss, allowing five runs in 2/3 of an inning.
Harold Mozingo started for VCU and held the Huskies to two runs on three hits in five innings. Cody Eppley (4-1) pitched the final four innings of the game and earned the victory.
Northeastern will host Maine in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Friedman Diamond at 3 p.m. NU will play its final CAA series of the season at George Mason beginning Thursday at 3 p.m.
