The loss puts the Huskies (27-22) on the brink of elimination. They will play top-seeded James Madison tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., needing a win to stay alive in the tournament.
"We have to forget about this game and get back to the way we play," said head coach Neil McPhee.
NU gave up a run on two errors in the top of the first. Sergio Miranda reached on an error by senior Arman Sidhu and was forced on a fielder’s choice by Kwan Evans. After a failed pickoff attempt by junior Adam Ottavino sailed into right field, Evans moved to third base. He came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Scott Sizemore.
The Huskies got on the board immediately against VCU starter Harold Mozingo. Senior Chris Emanuele led off the game with a double to the left-center gap and moved to third on senior Matt Morizio’s single. Freshman Mike Tamsin then singled home Emanuele to tie the game at 1-1. After a walk to junior Dan Milano, senior Jeff Maher grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to bring home Morizio and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
However, the Rams scored four times in the second on two more Husky errors. Jared Bolden singled to lead off the inning and scored one out later when Trai Harris singled to right and Maher mishandled the ball allowing Harris to move to second. After Ottavino struck out Nate Anderson for the second out, Chris Jackson singled up the middle to bring in Harris and give the Rams a 3-2 lead.
The next batter, Miranda, then reached when senior Brian Nutting mishandled a bouncer to second. Ottavino hit the next batter and then allowed a two-run single to Sizemore to make it 5-2.
VCU (31-22) added another run in fourth before Milano homered in the bottom of the inning to cut VCU’s lead to 6-3. However, that was all the Huskies could muster on the day.
The Rams tacked on a run in the sixth and three in the ninth to blow open the game.
Ottavino (4-5) threw seven innings and allowed seven runs, three of which were earned, on 10 hits. He walked three and struck out six, pushing his Northeastern strikeout records to 120 this season and 290 in his career.
Mozingo (7-1) struggled early, but settled in to handle NU. He pitched a complete game and allowed three runs on four hits. He did not allow a hit after Milano’s homer in the fourth. He walked two and fanned three batters.
The Huskies will take on the Dukes in what is an elimination game for NU tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Junior Dave Pellegrine will be the starting pitcher for Northeastern.
