Senior Jeff Maher got the ninth-inning comeback started with a single, followed by a single by freshman James Donaldson. Milano then came up and battled with Panthers (7-7, 1-1 CAA) closer Justin Newman (0-1), fouling off pitch after pitch before doubling to deep left to score junior Garrett Chin, who was running for Maher, to tie the game 2-2.
Morizio then singled through the right side to bring home Donaldson and Milano. Senior Brian Nutting added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, scoring freshman Jeff Thomson, who had been intentionally walked.
Sophomore Kris Dabrowiecki (2-0) turned in Northeastern’s third straight quality start, tossing eight innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked two. Dabrowiecki now owns a miniscule 1.88 ERA in 14-1/3 innings.
Freshman Trevor Smith nailed down the win with a scoreless ninth, picking up his first collegiate save.
The Huskies (4-3, 1-1 CAA) had struggled most of the game to get runs, leaving 14 men on base. Down 1-0, the Huskies tied the game when Milano took a Clayton Shunick pitch over the left field wall in the seventh inning.
In the eighth, the Huskies preserved the tie when Jeff Maher threw Chase Childers out at the plate on a base hit by Eric Suttle, but the next batter Ryan Sterling singled to right and Maher’s second throw was wide, allowing Suttle to score.
The Huskies and Panthers play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Adam Ottavino gets the start for NU.
