Sheldon McDonald started the game for the Huskies, but he struggled through three innings and was relieved by Trevor Smith after giving up a lead-off walk in the fourth. Smith was tremendous for the Huskies, going the final six innings. He gave up six hits and one run over that span, striking out six. At one point Smith retired 11-straight Monarch batters.
Several players shined offensively for the Huskies. Captain Dan Milano smashed a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Mike Lyon went 2-4 with a double, triple, two RBI and a run scored. Captain Josh Porter went 3-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. And Tony DiCesare went 2-5 with a two-run triple and scored two runs.
Milano also continued to display his defensive prowess behind the plate, throwing out Monarch runners on two of their three stolen base attempts. He has gunned down 15 of 29 would-be base stealers on the season.
The win improves the Huskies to 9-8 on the season and 5-6 in the conference. The loss puts Old Domion at 21-13 and 9-3 in the CAA. The Huskies will be back in action on Tuesday as the travel across town to face Boston College.
