Huskies sweep Northwestern
March 1, 2009
Chain of Lakes Park (Winter Haven, Fla.)
Things looked grim for the Northeastern Huskies for most of game two of the double-header against Northwestern on Sunday afternoon. Through the first six of the seven inning game the Huskies had no runs and only two hits before exploding in the ninth to get the walk-off win.
Northwestern took the lead in the fifth inning when Paul Snieder belted a single, followed by a Tony Vercelli double which drove Snieder home. Trevor Stevens would add another single driving Vercelli home giving the Wildcats two runs in the inning.
Les Williams pitched a strong 5-2/3 for the Huskies holding the Wildcats to six hits and struck out seven batters while allowing three runs.
Northeastern was held to only one hit through the first five innings before Mike Tamsin slugged a stand-up double over the head of the center fielder in the sixth. Frank Pesanello was able to move Tamsin to third while grounding out but the Huskies could not get Tamsin home. In the seventh and final inning the Huskies started strong when Devin Barry slammed a double up the middle. Brendan Stokes would then reach on an error. Matt Miller then singled to load the bases. David Gustafson then emptied the bases with a deep double to tie the game.
The Wildcats elected to walk both Mike Tamsin and Frank Pesanello to load the bases. James Donaldson made his way to the plate and worked the count to 3-1. On the fifth pitch of the at bat it came across as a ball, and the Huskies would walk home to the win.
Northeastern moves to 2-1 on the season and take on Duquesne Monday at 2:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
