Northeastern takes down Northwestern

Chain of Lakes Park (Winter Haven, Fla.)

Northeastern wasted no time, starting hot out of the gates with three doubles in the top of the first. Matt Miller, Frank Pesanello, and James Donaldson each stroked a double as the Huskies put up three runs in the first.

Trevor Smith was strong on the mound and had five strikeouts through the first four innings keeping the Wildcats to only 5 hits.

After Northwestern took the lead in the bottom of the third the Huskies stormed back again scoring three runs in the top of the fourth. Brendan Stokes got on first with a walk, he was moved to second after Sam Berg got on after a Wildcats error. Matt Miller slammed a double driving both Stokes home and Berg to third. Berg would score on a past ball to reclaim the lead for Northeastern. Miller would score after a second Northwestern error.

A lengthy rain delay stalled the game in the top of the fifth inning with one runner on for the Wildcats. After the 45 minute delay Dan Zehr came in to pitch the rest of the fifth and quickly dispatched the Wildcat batters.

Zehr would stay in the ballgame and pitch five scoreless innings striking out six batters and only allowing three hits.

The Huskies take on the Wildcats for game two of the double header 20 minutes after the completion of the first game.
