Huskies defeat Iona, 7-2

The Northeastern Huskies started the 1st Annual Strike Out Cancer Baseball Tournament on a good note as they beat Iona College 7-2. Ryan Quigley pitched seven strong innings as the Huskies put up seven runs, to many for Iona to overcome.

After trailing by an early Iona run the Huskies got on the scoreboard with two runs in the 3rd inning. Brendan Stokes and Ryan Kemp both drew walks for the Huskies. Sam Berg bunted Stokes to third and Kemp to second and David Gustafson came to the plate. Gustafson hit a single to left field scoring both Stokes and Kemp giving the Huskies the 2-1 lead.

After Iona tied the game at two, the Huskies jumped back out to a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Sam Berg scored off of a wild pitch.

Northeastern increased their lead in the seventh by another two runs. Ryan Kemp started off with a walk before Sam Berg singled up the middle. With two runners on base, Matt Miller slammed a double to left-center sending both Berg and Kemp home and giving the Huskies a 5-2 advantage.

Northeastern kept the offense in high gear adding another two runs in the eighth. Mike Tamsin scored off a Juff Dunlap sacrifice fly and Frank Pesanello scored from second as Brendan Stokes singled down the right field line.

Ryan Quigley came out after seven beautiful innings. Quigley allowed only three hits and struck out ten batters in seven innings. Dan Zehr came in relief for Quigley to start the eighth. Zehr would get through the eighth and ninth inning as the Huskies came away winners. Zehr only allowed one hit in two innings.

The Huskies continue the Strike Out Cancer Baseball Tournament tomorrow at 12 p.m. as they face host Seton Hall. Jeff Thomson is expected to start on the mound for the Huskies.
