Huskies capture fifth Beanpot crown, 5-3

In the 20th Baseball Beanpot at Fenway Park the Northeastern Huskies captured their fifth crown, their first since 2007 with a final score of 5-3. Northeastern was paced by phenomenal efforts on the mound from Les Williams, Andrew Leenhouts and Dan Zehr.
The Huskies took the first lead of the game top of the third inning when the Huskies put together three runs. Matt Miller led the inning off with a double and it was followed up by a Frank Compagnone single, a Mike Tamsin single, and a James Donaldson double to left field. Miller, Compagnone and Tamsin would all come across to score earned runs.
In the sixth the Huskies increased their lead. Ryan Maguire lead the inning off with a textbook bunt down the left field line. Maguire would then steal second with Matt Miller as the batter. Miller would poke a single over the head of the second baseman allowing Maguire to score from second and advancing Miller to second on the throw.
Les Williams pitched a strong five innings for the Huskies and did not give up a run while striking out five batters. For Williams it was his first decision in eight appearances.
"It was a great feeling, I haven't had any decisions this year, so it was good one to get." said Williams.
David Gustafson hit his team leading 17th double in the seventh inning to score James Donaldson and increase the Huskies lead to 5-0.
Things got dicey in the ninth for Northeastern. The Minutemen were able to get three runs across and had two runners on base when Dan Zehr got Mike Gedmen to ground to first base and end the game. Dan Zehr picked up the one-out save, his third save of the season.
"That last inning, it obviously got a little scary there so we brought in
Danny Zehr who did a good job again." said head coach Neil McPhee. "Our two pitchers before, Les [Williams] and
our freshman Drew [Leenhouts] were absolutely outstanding."
For Northeastern 2009 is their fifth Beanpot title. The Huskies now claim five Beanpot titles which only ranks behind Boston College's eight. Northeastern has won two titles in the last three seasons.
Northeastern will face Bryant University on Tuesday at Friedman Diamond at 3 p.m. JT Ross is expected to get the start for the Huskies.
