Huskies rally for game two victory over VCU, 8-6

It was a beautiful day for baseball Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond, perhaps made even more pretty by the Huskies 8-6 victory. The Huskies fell behind 6-2 but rallied in the seventh scoring four runs to get the victory. The Huskies hit back-to-back home runs in the inning.

The Huskies took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Frank Compagnone slugged a ball to deep center field which hopped the fence after one bounce landing Compagnone on second with a ground rule double. Following Compagnone, Mike Tamsin hit a single to left center scoring Compagnone. For Tamsin it was his team leading 29th RBI of the season.

Joe Van Meter tied the game at one in the top of the second inning with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right center. Van Meter's home run mark the first home run of the season at Friedman Diamond to the right half of the field, right field home runs being a trend that would continue through out the ball game.

The Huskies scored again in the bottom of the second when Jeff Dunlap hit a triple to right center. With Dunlap on third Ryan Maguire laid down a bunt down the third base line scoring Dunlap from third and Maguire dove into first safely.

The Huskies would fall behind by a score of 6-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning and then the Huskies would begin chipping away at the lead. David Gustafson scored in the fourth off a Jeff Dunlap single to center and in the fifth Frank Compagnone would score off a Frank Pesanello single.

The Huskies would take the lead in the seventh inning with some offensive fireworks. Mike Tamsin tripled to center field with one out in the inning. With Tamsin on third James Donaldson lifted a homer to right field tying the game at six. Two pitches later Frank Pesanello bombed a homer to right center to give the Huskies the one-run edge. The home run was the 37th of Pesanello's career tying the all-time mark at Northeastern. The Huskies would add one more run in the seventh giving them a 8-6 lead to close the inning.

Jeff Thomson had a rough outing for the Huskies and got chased with only two innings pitched and five runs coming across. Trevor Smith came in a pitched very well for the Huskies going the next seven innings allowing only one run to cross. Smith moves to 3-2 with the win.

The Huskies will face the Rams in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m.
