NU snaps losing streak, beats UMass 5-3

Northeastern snapped a five game losing streak beating the UMass Minutemen 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. A three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference maker for the Huskies as they were able to hold the lead the rest of the game. Dan Zehr became the all-time saves leader at Northeastern as he picked up his 10th save of his career as a Husky.

Northeastern opened up the scoring in the first inning for the 14th time of the season. Matt Miller lead the game off with a double to left and was moved to third by Frank Compagnone. Mike Tamsin hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller from third.

UMass went on to score three straight runs to take a 3-1 lead after three innings.

Northeastern got back on the board in the fifth putting up a single run. David Gustafson started the inning getting hit by the pitch and was moved to second off a Matt Miller single. With Gustafson on second base Frank Compagnone singled to center to score Gustafson.

Northeastern regained the lead in the sixth inning scoring three runs with some help from the UMass defense. Frank Pesanello and Brendan Stokes started the inning with back to back singles. Both runners advanced a bag off a wild pitch putting them on second and third. Ryan Maguire laid down a bunt down the third base line, UMass had some trouble with the ball and both Pesanello and Stokes would score off the error.

Northeastern added their sixth run in the seventh inning when Frank Pesanello scored his second run of the ball game, once again off an error.

JT Ross got the win for the Huskies after pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh inning. Andrew Leenhouts pitched the first two for the Huskies, followed by Brandon McNelis who pitched three innings for the Huskies with a pair of strikeouts. Russ Lloyd pitched the eighth.

Dan Zehr came in for the ninth inning and recorded three outs to pick up the save. For Zehr it is his tenth save of his career, making Zehr the all-time leader in saves at Northeastern. Zehr passed Bob Nicklas (1989-91) and Tim Bush (2003-05), both with nine career saves. It was the sixth save of the season for Zehr.

Northeastern returns to the diamond this weekend as they host Delaware in a crucial three-game CAA series. First pitch on Friday is at 2 p.m.
