Pesanello sets home run record as Huskies sweep
May 10, 2009
Friedman Diamond (Brookline, Mass.)
Northeastern secured its first CAA sweep of the season as the Huskies took game three against the Delaware Blue Hens 3-1. Northeastern was led by Frank Pesaenllo who jacked his 38th career home run and Mike Tamsin who brought across two RBI. Jeff Thomson struck out 11 in his complete game effort.
Northeastern now finds itself in a tie with Towson for the sixth and final spot in the CAA Tournament at 11-10. The Huskies and Tigers will square off next Thursday through Saturday in Towson, Md. In the midst of a tight CAA race, the Huskies are just one game behind Georgia State and Old Dominion for second place.
The Huskies started the game off with a bang as Matt Miller drilled a stand-up triple to the right center wall. Mike Tamsin hit a hard grounder to short that would allow Miller to score and give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
In the third Matt Miller would jump start the Huskies offense as he legged out an infield single. Frank Compagnone would move Miller to third with a single to left field to bring up Mike Tamsin. Tamsin would hit a long fly to center field to score Miller and give Tamsin his second RBI of the game.
Frank Pesanello hit ninth home run of the season to lead of the fourth inning and give the Huskies a 3-0 lead but perhaps more important was that it was Pesanello's 38th career home run. The homer cleared the right field bleachers, an absolute blast that was close to 425 feet.
Pesanello passed Tim Daley (1995-98) to become the all-time home run king at Northeastern. Pesanello now has the single season home run record of 20 which he set last season and the career home run record with his blast today.
Delaware would get back in the ball game in the sixth inning as they had a run come across making it a 3-1 ball game through five and a half.
Jeff Thomson was dealing all game and picked up the win after pitching the complete game striking out 11. Thomson moved to 6-4 on the season and earned his 16th career win tying him with John Burns (1997-2001) for eighth all-time at Northeastern.
Northeastern returns travels to Bryant University for a Monday afternoon game in Smithfield, R.I. at 3 p.m.
