Huskies fall to Towson 13-10 in 11 innings

In a slug fest at Towson, Md. Thursday afternoon the Huskies fell to the Towson Tigers 13-10 in 11 innings. Northeastern and Towson battled back and forth all game with each team taking numerous leads and numerous rallies but in the end the hard hitting Towson Tigers walked off with a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th.
The Huskies now find themselves in a precarious playoff position. Far from being eliminated the Huskies most likely will have to win the next two games and at the very least split. If the Huskies end the season 12-12 in CAA play they would still have an outside shot at making the playoffs however if the Huskies can win the next two and end the season 13-11 their playoff prospects would be high.
Northeastern fell behind by an early two runs in the bottom of the first but exploded for five in the top of the second inning. James Donaldson led the inning with a single through the left side. On the next pitch Frank Pesanello lifted a bomb to left center to tie the game. The homer was Pesanello's 10th of the season.
Northeastern put two more runners aboard after Jeff Dunlap was hit by the pitch and Brendan Stokes was walked. Ryan Maguire lifted his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence, the second Huskies homer of the inning and giving the Huskies a 5-2 advantage.
The run parade was only getting started as Towson responded for five runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Northeastern tied the game at seven in the top of the third when James Donaldson hit his tenth home run of the season scoring Mike Tamsin.
Towson scored in the fifth straight inning getting a run across in the bottom of the third inning. NU once again tied the game in the fourth when Ryan Maguire scored from third off a double play grounder. At the end of four innings of play the score was a blistering 8-8.
With a score like that its easy to imagine that neither starter made it very far in the ball game. Trevor Smith went an inning and two thirds before being relieved by Les Williams.
Northeastern took a lead in the fifth inning as they continued to manufacture runs as James Donaldson scored off a Frank Pesanello single. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at nine.
In the sixth inning the Huskies would once again take the lead when Matt Miller hit his first career home run. Miller is the 11th Husky to hit a home run this season and the fourth to hit one in today's game.
Les Williams pitched six innings for the Huskies before Dan Zehr came in to get the final out of the eighth inning. Williams allowed two earned runs while striking out five.
As the two teams entered the ninth inning the scored was tied 10-10. The eighth inning was the first full scoreless inning between the two teams.
The Huskies went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth leaving it up to Dan Zehr and the Huskies defense to force a tenth inning. It got dicey but the Huskies were able to strand two Towson base runners and force a tenth inning.
Once again in the top of the tenth the Huskies went 1-2-3 with three straight strike outs, all swinging. The Huskies returned the 1-2-3 favor in the bottom half of the inning to send the game to the 11th.
Towson would end the game in the bottom of the 11th when Austin Harclerode hit a three run homer to left center as Towson won game one 13-10.
Northeastern and Towson return to the diamond on Friday in game two. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
