Five-run ninth inning rally propels Huskies to victory
May 16, 2009
John B. Schuerholz Park (Towson, Md.)
The Huskies needed all nine innings to get the win over Towson, luckily for NU, baseball is a nine inning sport. Northeastern was trailing 8-7 going into the ninth inning but rallied for five runs to take a 12-8 lead. Trevor Smith would sit the Tigers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to close out the Tigers and advance to the CAA playoffs. The NU bats were impressive all series scoring 35 runs on 55 hits with 10 home runs.
With the victory Northeastern will advance to the CAA playoffs for the first time since 2006 and make their second appearance in the playoffs, an impressive feat considering the Huskies were selected to finish 10th in the CAA in the preseason poll. NU will be the fifth seed and face Georgia State in their first game.
The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Frank Pesanello doubled down the left field line and was brought home by Brendan Stokes who doubled to left center.
Towson would tie the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Huskies would respond in the top of the fifth scoring three runs. Frank Compagnone and Mike Tamsin brought the runs in for the Huskies.
Much like all series once one team took the lead, the other side responded and Towson did scoring seven runs in the next three innings to take 8-4 lead going into the eighth.
Jeff Thomson pitched five innings for the Huskies allowing five runs to score, only four of them earned. Smith had two strikeouts and one walk.
Dan Zehr entered the game in the seventh and pitched two innings allowing only one hit, unfortunately it was a three run homer.
In the eighth inning the Huskies began to rally to try and back another comeback. James Donaldson hit a solo home run to left center. Following Donaldsons bomb the Huskies loaded the bases for Ryan Maguire who singled to left center to score Brendan Stokes and Frank Pesanello. Going into the bottom of the eighth the Huskies trailed by a run 8-7.
Trevor Smith entered the game for the Huskies in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith got the Tigers to go down 1-2-3 with two strike outs, both looking.
When you need to score runs having your 2-3-4 batters are the ones you want to be coming up in the top of the ninth. Frank Compagnone delivered with a lead off double to left center. Mike Tamsin tied the game at eight with a triple to right center to bring in Compagnone. James Donaldson brought Tamsin in to give the Huskies their first lead since the fifth inning with a single to right field.
Frank Pesanello did what he does best, and that's hit home runs jacking his 13th of the season straight to center to give the Huskies an 11-8 lead. David Gustafson continued the bombs with a homer to left to give a Huskies a 12-8 lead at the end of the inning.
The Huskies entered the bottom of the ninth with the season on the line and Trevor Smith would return to the mound. Kevin Collins lined out to left for the first out of the inning. Steve Yarsinsky would follow Collins with a three pitch strike out. Matt Collins represented the Tigers final hope and he would ground out to short to give the Huskies the victory.
Northeastern advances to the CAA playoffs starting Wednesday. The Huskies will face Georgia State in their first game as the fifth seed.
