Huskies drop out of CAA Tournament to Delaware
May 21, 2009
Brooks Field (Wilmington, N.C.)
Northeastern fell to the Delaware Blue Hens on Thursday afternoon to end their run in the 2009 CAA Tournament. The Huskies were led by James Donaldson and David Gustafson, each with a pair of RBI. Jeff Thomson took the loss for the Huskies pitching five-plus.
The Huskies season comes to a close with a final record of 28-25, 13-11 in the CAA. It was a record setting season in many respects for the Huskies. Mike Tamsin set the career records hits record and single season hits record and Frank Pesanello set the career home runs record. Northeastern also finished with an above .500 record for the first time since 2007 and the first time the Huskies went above .500 in the CAA since 2006. Northeastern set 15 team or personal records this season.
Northeastern fell into an early 3-0 hole as the Blue Hens scored a run in the first and a pair of runs in the second inning.
In the fifth the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs after Frank Pesanello and Brendan Stokes each hit a single up the middle. Jeff Dunlap laid down a bunt to sacrifice the two runners to second and third, Dunlap's bunt was perfect and an error on Brad Miller allowed Dunlap to reach safely.
David Gustafson poked a single up the middle after a great at bat with the bases loaded scoring two runs and decreasing the UD lead to one. Ryan Maguire stepped in to the batters box with runners on first and second and still no outs. Maguire laid down the sacrifice to advance the runners and bring up the top of the Huskies line up. Brad Miller would escape the inning with the lead in tact, 3-2 after four and a half.
The Huskies struggled in the bottom of the fifth committing four errors allowing three runs to score giving the Blue Hens a 6-2 lead.
In the sixth James Donaldson hit his 12th home run of the season to drop the lead to three runs. Donaldson's shot cleared the right field fence to space to spare.
Mike Tamsin made history in the seventh inning with an RBI single to right. It was the 74th hit of the season for Tamsin breaking the single season record at NU, a record he set last season. Ryan Maguire would also come across to score in the seventh making it a 9-5 ball game.
The Huskies came into the top of the ninth inning needing to score four runs to tie the game, and five to take the lead. Corey Crispell would end the game as the top of the Huskies line up was held at bay.
The loss to Delaware eliminates the Huskies from the CAA Tournament and ends their season. The game also marks the final game for the nine seniors on the Huskies squad.
