ACADEMIC LIFE...
Northeastern University is a superb private university offering a wide and diverse choice of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degrees. The university is world renown for its Cooperative Education degree granting programs, whereby students gain professional experience within their major, build a resume and a network of sources in the professional and business worlds, concurrent to earning their degrees. As a student-athlete, you have an added dimension that the business/professional world greatly values. Northeastern graduates gain an enormous advantage as they enter the professional world with their degree, a two-year resume and a college athletic career that opens doors of opportunity to their world after baseball.
CAMPUS LIFE
The campus is located in the Back Bay section of Boston, in the beautiful Fenway area and bordered by Copley Square, a popular tourist attraction for sightseeing, shopping and socializing. One block west on Huntington Avenue is the Museum of Art and one block east is Symphony Hall, home of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Huntington Avenue was recently titled "The Avenue of the Arts" and is presently undergoing a beautification project that will dramatically enhance the entire frontage of the campus. We are also an "outfield throw" from Fenway Park, where we play the "Beanpot" Tournament along with Boston College, Harvard and UMass. (You can see the lights from your dorm room). The campus is one of the most beautiful big city campuses in the country. The impeccably manicured landscape, with red brick walkways throughout, was presented the Presidential national architectural design award as the best urban campus in America. Campus life at Northeastern and around Boston is incredibly exciting and offers students from 75+ schools of higher learning the fullest college experience in the country. Not only do college students gain their education in Boston, they enjoy the additional "education of life" in the best "College Town" in America.
BASEBALL PROGRAM
Baseball at Northeastern is a challenging and rewarding experience in one of the top Division I programs in the east. Our success has been consistent over the past several years, with two America East Conference Championships, (1994 & 1997) and six runner-up finishes. We have participated in two NCAA Regional tournaments and have been ranked in the Top Five Division I Poll in New England yearly. Players in our program have the opportunity to develop into professional prospects, and are part of a program that challenges for a conference championship each year. Those two elements combine for a competitive and most enjoyable college athletic experience. In the past few seasons we have had a number of our players drafted and signed and are now working their way toward potential Major League careers. The 1998 team produced Carlos Pena (Engineering Technology), a first round pick of the Texas Rangers and the 10th player chosen in the draft. Greg Montalbano (Civil Engineering), LHP, led the country in ERA for almost the entire 1999 season and was a fifth round ('00) draft pick of the Boston Red Sox. Carlos was called up to "The Show" on Labor Day 2001 and had his 1st major league hit a day later!
ATHLETIC FACILITIES
FRIEDMAN DIAMOND is now one of the PREMIER baseball fields in the country with the installation of ASTROPLAY, the newest technology in athletic surfaces. The entire field, with base cutouts, has been resurfaced. This is the same "Turf" as Veterans Stadium (Philadelphia) and Tropicana Field (Tampa). (Impossible to tell it isn't GRASS)! With few "rain outs", no "bad hops" and a truly beautiful baseball site, Friedman Diamond will become a prime recruiting attraction. There will be no better playing conditions anywhere in college baseball! Combined with our indoor facility, Cabot Center, Northeastern Baseball will offer top players year-round facilities second to none. Cabot is a fully netted "cage" with artificial surface that includes a full major league diamond which can be divided into 3 separate "Live BP" areas, where pitchers throw to batters off mounds. Three additional 70' cages allow hitters as many as 100 swings per practice. We also conduct full speed scrimmages at least once per week during the inside practice season. Our program's success is due, in great part, to the year-round skills development our players receive as a result of the Cabot facilities. Add the high tech surface now on Friedman, and a college player couldn't ask for more!
