Stroke Survivor Overcomes Adversity, Rejoins Team and Fights Against Stroke.

Photo by Jeff Foley/American Heart Association

Katie Jerdee, a Northeastern University Middler and member of the Women’s Club Soccer team has overcome the adversity of suffering a stroke while on her way to practice, after a brave recovery she now works to raise stroke awareness and prevention.

Close to a year and a half ago, in early November 2006, Katie was joining her teammates in a run to Parsons Field for practice when she suffered a stroke. The stroke was in her right cerebellum and caused disability to the right side of her body. Everything from writing, walking and running to balance, coordination and motor skills had to be relearned. After a surgical procedure and countless hours of rehabilitation Katie was able to make a terrific recovery and rejoined her team as a competitive member during the 2007 season.

Through her challenges in dealing with the stroke, Katie has learned the importance of awareness and prevention and is now helping to spread the word. She has partnered with Tedy’s Team, formed by New England Patriot Tedy Bruschi who suffered through many of the same side effects that Katie dealt with, when he suffered a stroke in 2005. Tedy’s Team works with the American Stroke Association to raise money for research that will hopefully lead to the end of stroke.

On April 21, 2008 Katie will run in the Boston Marathon to raise money for Tedy’s Team. She has also joined Tedy Bruschi in an advertising campaign with the American Stroke Association for Stroke Awareness Month. The campaign will focus on stroke warning signs and can be seen in posters at the Government Center T station and on billboards throughout the Boston area.

Please join Katie in her efforts to raise awareness and fight stroke. If you would like to help her reach her fundraising goal for the Boston Marathon please follow the link below.
