Three Huskies take home CAA postseason honors
Nov. 6, 2009
Boston, Mass.
Sophomore Kaela Barker and freshmen Crystal Poland and Nicola Graham
were awarded CAA postseason honors on Friday at the conference's annual
banquet. Poland took home three honors, including the CAA Rookie of the
Year award and earned spots on the All-CAA first team and All-Rookie team.
Graham was also selected to the CAA All-Rookie squad, while Barker
received an All-CAA second team nod.
Poland (Crofton, British Columbia) is the second Husky in a row to win the CAA Rookie of the Year award; Kaela Barker took home the honor last season after a nine-point freshman campaign. Poland led the team-- and all CAA freshmen in 2009-- with 30 points on 12 goals and six assists. She is the first freshman to lead the team in points since Northeastern began league play in 1989. The Huskies were 6-1 this season when Poland scored in a game.
Graham (North Vancouver, British Columbia) also had a stellar first year on Huntington Avenue, posting five goals and two assists for 12 points. Her final point total placed her 5th in the CAA among freshman scorers. Graham's biggest goal of the season came in one of the Huskies' biggest games: a 1-0 win over No. 17 Delaware on Oct. 11.
Barker (North Vancouver, British Columbia) chipped in with 15 points on five goals and five assists in 2009, shattering her point total from the previous season (9). On Oct. 9 vs. Towson, Barker exploded for a five-point game (two goals and one assist) to lead NU to a 3-0 win. She was also the only Husky to record both a defensive save and a goal in the same game, a feat she accomplished on Oct. 23 at Hofstra.
The Huskies improved upon a 7-13 season in 2008 with a 9-9 mark this season. Northeastern also won two more conference games than last year, finishing two slots higher in the CAA standings in the process.
