Four Huskies claim All-CAA honors
Nov. 7, 2008
Boston, Mass.

Pam Aldridge, Kaela Barker, Carolyn Malloy and Jillian Wilkes of the Northeastern field hockey team earned All-CAA honors, the conference announced Friday at its annual awards banquet in Virginia Beach, Va. Barker took home the top honor, being named CAA Rookie of the Year, and was also named to the CAA All-Rookie team. Aldridge and Wilkes were named to the All-CAA second team, while Malloy joined Barker on the All-Rookie team.

Barker, a freshman midfielder from North Vancouver, British Columbia, quickly stepped into the Huskies’ lineup, starting 19 of 20 games at a very demanding center midfield position. In addition, she contributed nine points on three goals and three assists. She scored her first collegiate goal in Northeastern’s season opener against Northwestern Aug. 29, and recorded an assist in NU’s 2-1 win over then-No. 18 Boston University Sept 14. Head coach Cheryl Murtagh praised the freshman as a player who “understands the game well, and is a good passer and playmaker.”

Aldridge, a sophomore midfielder from Richmond, British Columbia, started all 20 games for the Huskies, and led the team in scoring, with 23 points on ten goals and three assists. All three totals are career-highs. Aldridge also led Northeastern in shots, with 68. Her ten goals rank her seventh in the CAA. “Pam has great skills and creates a lot of our attack. She is a feisty offensive player.” says Murtagh of the sophomore.

Wilkes, a senior back from Dedham, Mass., was also a 20-game starter in 2008. In addition to anchoring the Huskies’ defensive unit, Wilkes had a career year offensively. After not figuring in any scoring in her first three years on the team, she finished fourth on the team with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Wilkes has battled compartment syndrome in her legs, and has had two off-season surgeries to combat the condition. “Jill is a well-respected person on our team,” notes Murtagh. “She sets such a good example on and off the field. The players know they can go to her for advice and help. She’s a great leader and a great person to have on our team.”

Malloy, a freshman forward from Windham, N.H., played in 19 of 20 games for the Huskies, and led NU rookies in scoring, with 13 points on five goals and three assists. Malloy comes to Northeastern from Salem High School, where she played four season of field hockey. She was a three-time team MVP, three-time team scoring leader, and holds the school’s single-season goal-scoring record, with 30. Salem won three consecutive state championships during Malloy’s four years.

Barker is Northeastern’s first CAA Rookie of the Year, and Aldridge and Wilkes are both first-time All-CAA selections. Northeastern has had at least one player named to the conference All-Rookie team every year since 2000.

CAA awards are determined by a vote of the league’s nine head coaches.

Northeastern finished the 2008 season 7-13 overall, and 1-7 in the CAA. Four of their losses came to teams that finished in the top 20 in the STX/NFHCA Division I national coaches poll, in No. 20 Massachusetts, No. 15 Boston College, No. 14 Drexel, and No. 4 James Madison. The Huskies also notched a win against then-No. 18 Boston University Sept. 14 and one against Stanford Oct. 4.
