Three Huskies named NFHCA All-Region

Pam Aldridge, Ashley Bascetta and Jillian Wilkes of the Northeastern field hockey team earned All-Region honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Wednesday. Aldridge was named to the All-Northeast Region first team, while Bascetta and Wilkes were named to the second team.

Aldridge, a sophomore midfielder from Richmond, B.C., started all 20 games for the Huskies and led the team in scoring, with 23 points on ten goals and three assists. All three totals are career-highs. Aldridge also led Northeastern in shots, with 62. Her ten goals ranked seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Bascetta, a senior midfielder from Granby, Conn. served as team co-captain and started all 20 games, finishing second on the team with a career-high 19 points on six goals and seven assists.

Wilkes, a senior back from Dedham, Mass., also served as team co-captain and also started all 20 games in 2008. In addition to anchoring the Huskies’ defensive unit, Wilkes had a career year offensively. After not figuring in any scoring in her first three years on the team, she finished fourth on the team with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Wilkes has battled compartment syndrome in her legs, and has had two off-season surgeries to combat the condition.

Bascetta was named to the NFHCA All-Region first team in 2007. Aldridge and Wilkes are both first-time selections. Fifteen players from the CAA were named to either a first- or second-team All-Region squad.

Northeastern finished the 2008 season 7-13 overall, and 1-7 in the CAA. Four of their losses came to teams that finished in the top 20 in the STX/NFHCA Division I national coaches poll, in No. 17 Massachusetts, No. 16 Drexel, No. 15 Boston College, and No. 4 James Madison. The Huskies also notched a win against then-No. 18 Boston University on Sept. 14 and one against Stanford Oct. 4.
