Northeastern built a two goal lead then fought back a furious UMaine rally on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Black Bears, in America East field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono, Maine.

Northeastern, currently ranked 20th in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, improved to 8-8 overall, 3-3 in America East. The loss dropped the Black Bears to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in league play, and seriously damaged UMaine's chances for a berth in next month's America East Tournament.

NU's Kelly Williams scored on the Huskies' only shot of the first half, with a blast from the left of UMaine goalie Danielle Burke that passed just inside the far post with 29:08 remaining.

Sarah Broderick made the score 2-0 in favor of the Huskies at the 22:58 mark of the second half, when she poked a loose rebound of a penalty corner shot into the Black Bear cage.

UMaine's Karli Bundy ended the Black Bear scoring drought with 7:05 left in regulation, when she got her stick on the ball in a scramble to the right of Northeastern goalie Emily Roy and slipped a shot just inside the near post.

Bundy's goal energized the UMaine offense, as the Black Bears earned three more penalty corners over the next five minutes.

Kristy Ferran scored what would have been a game-tying goal with 2:22 left on the clock, when she slapped a loose rebound past Roy. However the goal was later disallowed, after the officials decided that the initial penalty corner shot taken by Jen Johnstone had been too high.

UMaine outshot NU, 11-7, and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Black Bear goalie Jaye Lance, who came on in relief of Burke during the first half, finished the game with four saves. Roy made five stops in the Husky goal.
