![]() 2000 Schedule/Results Michigan State 2, Northeastern 1 (OT-PS) BROOKLINE, MA – It took penalty strokes to decide the field hockey game between 10th ranked Northeastern and 18th ranked Michigan State. Each scored in the first half, and following a scoreless second half, first overtime and second overtime, MSU outscored NU 3-2 in penalty strokes for the 2-1 victory. Julia Adams, Kate Wade and Lotte Hagen made their respective penalty strokes for the Spartans, and only Catriona Semple and Lorna Dobbie managed to score for the Huskies. In collegiate field hockey, after two overtimes, the game is decided by a series of five penalty strokes by each team. Whichever team scores the most, is awarded one goal to its overall score and the victory. Bridget Cooper scored less than six minutes into the game to give the visiting Spartans a 1-0 lead. It was the first first-half goal of the season allowed by the Huskies and it ended a streak of 252 minutes without allowing a goal by NU. However, Fior D’Alize Arrindell notched her third goal in the last three games to tie the game at 1-1 with 8:37 remaining in the first half. However, there would be no scoring the rest of the way as the defenses and goaltenders dominated. Kathleen Madaus made 10 saves for the Huskies while Mireille Evans had five for the Spartans. Each team had several chances in the two overtimes for the win, but each chance was turned away. Madaus made four saves alone in the second overtime, including a brilliant stop with her foot as time ran out. Northeastern (4-2) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. The Huskies only other loss on the season came against another Big Ten school, Michigan. Michigan State (6-2) earned a weekend sweep on Northeastern’s home field, as the Spartans defeated Providence yesterday in a game played at Parsons Field.
