BROOKLINE, MA — The University of Delaware scored an early goal and then hung on for a 1-0 victory over Northeastern University at Parsons Field Friday night. Juli Byrd scored for Delaware (3-5, 1-0 America East) at 26:31 to give the visitors the early lead. It was one of only four Blue Hen shots during the game, three of which came in the first half. Northeastern (5-3, 0-1 America East) started slow, but had numerous opportunities, especially down the stretch but could not score. The win by Delaware snaps a six-game losing streak against Northeastern. The last win was a 2-1 victory during the 1994 season. It was also the Blue Hen’s first ever victory against NU at Parsons Field. Northeastern outshot Delaware 18-4 for the game, and 13-1 in the second half. Also, the Huskies had seven penalty corners, including six in the second half and four in the final 15 minutes but could not score. Delaware’s defense did a great job defending against NU’s penalty corner, harassing the Husky shooter before a shot could even be attempted most times. Junior Catriona Semple had a great chance in the first half for NU, but her blast hit the side of the goal and deflected out. Delaware could not muster any offense in the second half, but with less than two minutes to play in the game, the Blue Hens broke into the NU zone and were rewarded a penalty corner with under 90 seconds to play that seemed to clinch the victory. But Kim Wagaman’s shot was saved by Kathleen Madaus. The Huskies managed one final attack, and with 14 seconds on the clock had a penalty corner. But as was the case for most of the game, Fior D’Alize Arrindell’s shot was blocked by the Delaware defense, and the time expired. Northeastern returns to action this Sunday at home against Towson at 1 p.m.
