BOSTON, MA - The Northeastern University field hockey team scored six unanswered goals to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat Quinnipiac 6-1 in the season opener for both teams.

The Huskies outshot the visiting Braves 23-7 and had a tremendous advantage in penalty corners (22-1). Junior Maureen Connelly (Greenland, NH) had a pair of scores, the first two of her career. Her classmate Aleisha Bemis (Oakland, ME) also scored her first career goal. Freshman Liane Dixon (Vineyard Haven, MA) had a goal and assist in her collegiate debut for the Huskies.

Julie Smith scored Quinnipiac's lone goal. Sarah Mathers made 11 saves in net for the Braves. Emily Roy (Winslow, ME) got the start in goal for NU, and made two saves. Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, MA) came on in relief midway through the second half, making one save.

NU dominated play in the early going, racking up 10 penalty corners. But the Huskies could not get on the scoreboard. It would be Quinnipiac that scored first, when Smith sent home a pass from Courtney Ryan at 13:52. The goal by the Braves woke up the Huskies, as 52 seconds later, Bemis took a pass from Sarah Broderick (Harwich, MA) to even the score. Then with no time left on the clock in the first half, the Huskies took the lead for good. On their 16th penalty corner of the first half, Fior Arrindell (Oakville, CT) blasted a shot for the goal. Carley Cook (Gloucester, MA) and Krisanne Duchemin (Mashpee, MA) assisted on the play.

Senior Kelly Williams (Shoreham, NY) scored on a penalty corner at 33:50 of the second half. Dixon then tipped in a Bemis shot at 27:02. Connelly then wrapped up the scoring for the Huskies with goals at 20:16 and 19:22.

The game was played at Northeastern's new home field, Sweeney Field. NU had played all its home games in previous seasons at Parsons Field in Brookline. But a new more grass-like surface, AstroPlay, was installed at Parsons. With AstroPlay not very conducive to field hockey, the Huskies switched homes to Sweeney Field. Located on Huntington Avenue, Sweeney Field gives the Huskies a home field next to the Northeastern campus.

The game marked the return to the NU lineup of Duchemin. The senior captain suffered a season ending knee injury in the fourth game last year.

The Huskies next play Monday at home against Massachusetts.
