BOSTON, MA — James Madison overcame a 2-1 deficit late in the game to defeat Northeastern 3-2 in overtime on Sunday at Sweeney Field in Boston. The Dukes entered the game as the 16th-ranked team in the nation, one spot behind the 15th-ranked Huskies. Trailing 2-1 with less than four minutes to play, Janelle Perlis (Hunlock Creek, PA) got to a rebound of one her teammate's shots, and slammed it past NU goalie Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, MA) for the game-tying goal at 3:24. In overtime, JMU outshot NU 3-0, with the final shot by Veerle Goudswaard (Houten, The Netherlands) beating Madaus for the winning score at 11:12 of OT. The win by the Dukes snapped NU’s seven-game winning streak. JMU improves to 8-4 on the season, while NU falls to 9-2. The three goals surrendered by NU this afternoon was only the third time all season that the Huskies have yielded more than one goal in a game. NU took an early lead at 28:50 of the first half when freshman Liane Dixon (Vineyard Haven, MA) crossed the ball to a racing Sara Webber (South Dennis, MA) who was able to beat JMU goalie Kiernan Raffo (Virginia Beach, VA) for her fourth goal of the season. The Dukes tied the score at 13:24 of the first half on a blast by Carrie Phillips (Elizabethtown, PA). It was the first goal allowed by Madaus since Sept. 30 at Delaware, a span of over 160 minutes. The game remained tied until 6:27 of the second half when NU’s sophomore Leigh Shea (Ipswich, MA) passed the ball into the circle and Dixon was able to redirect it into the net for the go-ahead score. For the game, JMU outshot NU 17-12, while NU had 10 penalty corners to JMU’s five. Madaus finished the game with seven saves while Raffo made six for the Dukes. The game marked the 300th in the coaching career of NU’s head coach Cheryl Murtagh. Murtagh is in her 14th season leading the Huskies and is two wins shy of 200 for her career, with a 198-92-10 mark over her tenure. The Huskies next play on Wednesday at home versus Harvard. SCORING
