BOSTON, MA — The University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated 18th-ranked Northeastern 2-1 at Sweeney Field in Boston on Wednesday night.

Mary Jo Malone (Water Mill, NY) scored the game-winning goal at 8:32 of the second half. Kelly Stolle (Warren, CT) hit the ball into the circle from the right side, and Malone got to it and was able to get the ball around NU goaltender Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, MA) for the winning score.

The win snaps UConn’s four-game losing streak and ends NU’s two-game winning streak. UConn improves to 6-8 on the season while NU falls to 11-4.

The Connecticut Huskies got on the board first at 27:27 of the first half. On a penalty corner, Lauren Henderson (Avondale Harara, Zimbabwe) blasted a shot for her team-leading 12th goal of the season. Lauren Christie (Raby, Australia) and Amy Marland (Mt. Warrigal, Australia) assisted on the play. The Northeastern Huskies tied the score before the end of the first half. At 18:42, Fior Arrindell (Oakville, CT) was able to pass the ball to an open Maureen Connelly (Greenland, NH) on the right side who scored her eighth goal of the season. The score remained tied until Malone’s game-winner in the second half.

Maureen Butler (Red Hook, NY) earned the win in net for Connecticut, making seven saves. Emily Roy (Winslow, ME) started the game in net for NU, making two saves and playing the entire first half. Madaus came on in relief and played the second half.
