BOSTON, MA — The Northeastern University field hockey team scored five unanswered goals to defeat Maine 5-1 in field hockey on Sunday at Sweeney Field in Boston. With the victory, the Huskies clinch the America East regular season title and will host the conference tournament which begins Friday Nov. 2. NU received its goals from five different players and senior Kelly Williams (Shoreham, NY) assisted on three of the scores. The Huskies are now 8-0 in league play with one conference game to go, 13-4 overall. NU has finished the regular season undefeated in conference play on two previous occasions, 1995 and 1997. Maine took a 1-0 lead at 16:27 of the first half when Rebecca Ouellet (Amesbury, MA) tipped in a Jen Johnstone (Dallas, PA) shot for the score. The Black Bears remained ahead for most of the first half. But with just 15 seconds to play before intermission, junior Aleisha Bemis’s (Oakland, ME) diving effort paid dividends as she deflected a Williams shot past Maine goalie Jaye Lance (Columbia, MD) for the tying goal. The Huskies then dominated the Black Bears in the second half, scoring four times and outshooting Maine 10-3. NU took the lead for good at 30:16 on a goal by freshman Liane Dixon (Vineyard Haven, MA) off an assist from Williams. Dixon has now recorded a point in seven straight games and a goal in six straight. Freshman Mari Creatini (Auburndale, MA) then scored on an individual effort, firing a blast past Lance for the goal at 12:30. NU’s fourth goal came at 8:19 of the second half when Creatini passed the ball from the right side into the circle to junior Fior Arrindell (Oakville, CT) who scored the goal. The Huskies’ final score came at 3:41. Williams put a shot towards the net off a penalty corner and Sarah Broderick (Harwich, MA) redirected it into the Maine net. Senior Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, MA) made four saves for the Huskies. Lance finished the game with five saves for Maine. The top four teams from America East advance to the conference tournament with the winner receiving an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
