BOSTON, MA - The Northeastern University field hockey team defeated Massachusetts 4-2 Monday evening at Sweeney Field in Boston. With the victory, the Huskies improve to 2-0, while the Minutewomen fall to 0-2.

Junior Sarah Broderick (Harwich, MA) led the way for the Huskies with her first career hat-trick, and her classmate Maureen Connelly (Greenland, NH) provided the other goal for NU. UMass received its goals from Anke Bruemmer and Erika Whiston.

The Huskies struck first, taking a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the game. Broderick took a pass inside the circle from Kelly Williams (Shoreham, NY) and scored her first goal of the season. It remained 1-0 NU until 21:29 when UMass capitalized on a penalty corner. Whiston hit the ball out to Lindsay Abbott, who set it up for a blast by Bruemmer. The Minutewomen took the lead 2-1 less than two minutes later when Whiston scored at 19:50. The score stayed 2-1 in UMass's favor for the remainder of the first half.

The Huskies again struck in the opening minute of a half, and again it was Broderick, tying the score 2-2 at 34:32 of the second. A great effort by sophomore Sara Webber (South Dennis, MA) produced another scoring chance for the Huskies. Webber raced around several UMass defenders, putting a shot on net. After a save by Ashley England (five for the game), Connelly was there to clean up the rebound for her third goal of the season. The goal came at 28:31 and put NU back on top 3-2. Williams and Broderick again got together to supply the Huskies with some insurance, as a Williams feed set up Broderick's third goal of the game at 19:19.

For the game, the Huskies outshot the Minutewomen 15-7, including 11-3 in the second half. NU had eight penalty corners to UMass's seven. Emily Roy (Winslow, ME) picked up the win in net for NU, making two saves.

Broderick's hat trick was the first by a Husky since Jackie Carl scored four goals versus Drexel Oct. 10, 1999. For UMass it was its second straight defeat at the hands of an America East team, as the Minutewomen fell 4-3 in their season opener against New Hampshire on Aug. 31.

The Huskies next play on Friday at Princeton, followed by a game on Sunday versus Syracuse, also to be played at Princeton.
