BOSTON, MA - The Northeastern field hockey team advanced to the finals of the America East Championship with a 2-1 victory over Maine on Friday at Sweeney Field. NU will play the winner of the BU/Delaware game on Sunday at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m. With the game tied 1-1 in the second half, senior Kelly Williams (Shoreham, NY) converted a penalty corner for the game-winning score with only 5:06 remaining in the game. Juniors Carley Cook (Gloucester, MA) and Sarah Broderick (Harwich, MA) assisted on the play. For the game, the top-seed Huskies outshot the fourth-seed Black Bears 15-8, and had 12 penalty corners to Maine's one. The Huskies got on the board first. At 20:12 of the first half, Broderick weaved her way through the Maine defense and beat Maine goalie Jaye Lance for the score. NU remained ahead until 24:53 of the second half. Maine had a scramble in front of the NU goal. Husky goalie Emily Roy (Winslow, ME) fell on the ball to stop the Black Bear scoring chance, which resulted in a penalty shot for Maine. Jen Johnstone took advantage of the opportunity, shooting the ball into the upper left corner of the goal and out of Roy's reach. Roy finished the game with four saves and Lance had 10 stops for the Black Bears. Northeastern advances to the championship game for the 11th time in 12 seasons. The Huskies have won six championships, the last coming in 1997.
